Raven Tools vs Semrush: Summary

Semrush offers in-depth analysis and advanced features for SEO, SEM, and social media.

Raven Tools is a good choice for basic SEO activities and as an easy-to-navigate SEO platform. But it not at the same level of functionality and no match for Semrush.

Raven Tools overview

Raven tools overview

Raven Tools was created in 2007 and, like many SEO tools, provides detailed data for extensive keyword research, competitor research, backlink analysis, website audits, and more.

It provides data on more than two search engines, including Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, and Baidu.

While it’s not the cheapest SEO tool, Raven Tools is cheaper than both the tier-A tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz, and also tier-B tools like SE Ranking, SEO Powersuite, etc.

You can also get a 7-day free trial on all its plans. This is one thing I look out for in every digital tool I sign up for because it proves one thing – the platform is confident in how powerful their tool is.

Semrush overview

Semrush has been a top industry player in the SEO market for a long time now, and this isn’t a coincidence. Its wide range of features, data, and capabilities makes it a favorite of many SEOs, marketers, and business owners.

While it started as an SEO tool, Semrush has evolved into an all-in-one digital marketing tool, enabling you to perform PPC advertising, social media optimization, SEO, and lots more. You can read more about what you can do with Semrush in my full overview.

Semrush provides detailed data from Google to enable you to do extensive research for your content marketing activities.

With pricing starting at $129.95 per month, Semrush might seem quite expensive. However, if you look at the range of tools and data it offers, you can see it’s fairly priced for the value it offers.

It also offers a 7-day free trial on its Pro and Guru Plans.

However, with my affiliate link, you can get a 14-day free trial to study the tool more extensively before making a choice.

To follow this comparison, getting free trials of both tools might be helpful, if you don’t have those yet. So, let’s start with that.

Free trials

Raven Tools and Semrush provide 7-day free trials to enable you to access their premium tools at no cost.

This means you have seven days to use both platforms to find out which is best for your SEO needs.

The free trial package offered by Raven Tools, however, is limited. You can barely do much with it, as you’d keep getting “no results” in most of your analysis. This is worrying, as a free trial is supposed to give you the same access as a paid subscription, only for a limited time.

The Semrush free trial is straightforward and promises to give you complete access to its tools and features. There’s no functionality limitation.

You can do extensive keyword research, competitor analysis, and other SEO tasks, just like someone using the paid tool would.

You can use my affiliate link for an extended 14-day free trial access on Semrush, 2x the time offered on the Semrush website.

Raven Tools vs Semrush: Detailed comparison

Keyword research

Both Raven Tools and Semrush allow you to perform keyword research and gain insights from extensive keyword databases.

Raven Tools’ keyword research feature provides you with keyword suggestions, search volume information, cost-per-click, and the competitive density of your keyword. It also lets you filter your data quickly to find what you need from its database of 1.4 billion keywords.

You can filter your data by the competition, CPC, search volume, and more. You can also exclude or include certain keywords when filtering.

raven tools keyword research

Raven Tool’s Keyword Rank Checker tool enables you to research a competitor’s entire domain or isolate one page to identify important keyword information, such as their rank position, estimated traffic, traffic cost, and SERP features.

Semrush, on the other hand, provides a more robust keyword research tool. Its database contains over 25.7 billion keywords.

Once you enter a keyword on Semrush’s Keyword Overview tool, it provides a detailed snapshot that contains the vital data you need.

In the snapshot, you’ll see the keyword search volume, difficulty, competitive density, CPC, and even the global volume. You’d get way more information than is available on Raven Tools.

Semrush keyword research

Semrush provides keyword features you can’t find on Raven Tools.

  • Keyword difficulty
  • Trend
  • Search intent
  • Related keywords
  • Questions

You can do lots more on Semrush. With the Keyword Magic Tool, you can filter keywords to find those with high-ranking potential. You can also do a broad match search for your keyword to see all variations of that keyword.

Semrush also provides an extensive keyword cluster feature to organize your keywords into groups. This feature enables you to visualize your keywords in clusters and organize them based on their ranking potential.

Raven Tools vs Semrush on keyword research

Semrush has a more extensive set of tools and a larger keyword database, making it more suitable if you need expansive and detailed keyword data. Reaven Tools might suit you better if you prefer a more direct approach with simple filtering options.

Competitor analysis

If you want to outperform your competitors, you must learn what they’re doing differently and adopt the strategies that yield great results.

Both Raven Tools and Semrush provide tools to enable you to monitor your competitor’s SEO activities. With both tools, you can:

  • Identify your competitor’s search traffic
  • Assess their backlinks profile
  • See your competitor’s top-performing keywords
  • See their top-ranking pages

Raven Tool’s 3-in-1 Competitor Analysis tool lets you analyze your competitor’s citation flow, anchor text, link data, and other important metrics. The tool provides you with updated, robust data from your competitors’ SEO activities.

I love that Raven doesn’t rely solely on its data to provide the insights you need. It combines data from Moz and Majestic to give you the freshest data to work with.

Competitor analysis is one of Semrush’s core strengths. Once you key in a competitor’s domain on Semrush’s Domain Overview page, you’ll get access to their:

  • Authority score
  • Organic search traffic
  • Paid search traffic
  • Backlinks, etc.

Semrush provides detailed information on the above metrics, enabling you to track down your competitor’s biggest SEO secrets. You can easily identify where your competitor’s major traffic comes from and the top keywords bringing them.

semrush domain overview (1)

Even more, Semrush provides further information on these keywords to help you analyze the core reason behind your competitor’s SEO activities. You’d see the volume of informational, navigational, commercial, and transactional keywords they’re ranking for and the traffic volume each set brings.

With Semrush’s Keyword Gap tool, you can compare your keyword strategy with up to five competitors. This lets you know where you’re lacking and what you need to do to catch up. Your analysis will reveal shared, unique, missing, and untapped keywords.

Raven Tools vs Semrush on competitor analysis

Raven Tools is great if you need a simple, affordable way to keep an eye on competitors, using data from trusted sources like Moz and Majestic. Semrush is better if you need deep insights to improve your SEO strategies based on detailed market analysis.

Choose Raven Tools for basic competitor monitoring and Semrush for more in-depth competitive strategy planning.

Backlink analysis

Raven Tools and Semrush provide tools that help you analyze the backlinks profiles of your competitors. With both tools, you can identify:

  • The backlink sources of a domain or page
  • The link’s anchor text
  • The link type, etc.

With Raven Tool’s Backlink Explorer, you can spy on your competitors to see which domains link to their websites. Raven Tools leverages metrics from top SEO tools, Moz and Majestic, to give you the complete backlink profile of any website.

raven tools backlink analysis

Raven Tool’s Backlink Manager organizes the new links you find from your competitors’ domains in one dashboard. This allows you to track your link-building progress and make adjustments where necessary.

Semrush provides a much larger backlink database and lets you do much more with its backlink tools. With the four essential backlink tools on Semrush, you can analyze any backlink data, audit your backlink profile, perform bulk analysis, and even do link-building outreach.

With the Semrush Backlink Analytics tool, you can see the number of backlinks, referring domains, organic traffic, outbound domains, and unique visits to the site you’re analyzing. You’ll also see the domain’s backlink network in a graphical form.

Semrush enables you to see your website’s new and lost referring domains and backlinks in a chart. This chart can easily help you determine whether your backlink profile is growing, stagnant, or shrinking.

Semrush backlink analysis

I love how effective Semrush is at performing backlink audits. It shows you the percentage of toxic, potentially toxic, and non-toxic links in your backlink profile. A further check will show you the domains these links come from and their toxicity score, enabling you to determine which domains to accept links from.

Semrush’s link-building tool is one of the best out there. It enables you to find link-building opportunities, send outreach emails directly from Semrush, and track and follow up on their replies.

Raven Tools vs Semrush on Backlink Analysis

Raven Tools is useful to organize and maintain an overview of backlink sources. Semrush is better if your goals include more ambitious backlink strategies like deep backlink analysis, extensive audits, and active link-building campaigns.

Rank tracking

Raven Tools and Semrush provide tools you can use to track your position on SERPs.

The SERP Rank Tracker lets you control how frequently your SERP ranking is checked. You can check it once a month, once a week, or even daily.

Raven Tools allows you to track up to 1875 weekly keywords for free each month. However, if you want to track more keywords, say an additional 100, you’d have to pay an additional $1.20.

I love that Raven Tools allows you to track your rankings on multiple search engines, including Google, Bing, Yandex, Baidu, and Yahoo.

Semrush, on the other hand, provides a powerful Position Tracking tool that enables you to monitor your site’s and competitors’ rankings on a daily basis.

Once you key in the domain, Semrush tracks it to provide information on its position, visibility, and estimated traffic, along with other SERP features. It shows the distribution of a domain’s rankings on SERPs, indicating the keywords that appear in the top 3, top 10, top 20, and top 100.

Raven Tools vs Semrush on rank tracking

Raven Tools is great for tracking a wide range of keywords across multiple search engines for free, making it ideal if you have a tight budget. Semrush offers a more dynamic position-tracking tool that provides detailed daily updates on rankings, making it better if you need in-depth analysis and want to monitor competitive environments closely.

Site audit

Raven Tools and Semrush offer website audit tools for identifying and fixing technical and on-page issues on your website.

The Raven Tools Website Auditor categorizes all issues your site may have into 6 categories, including visibility, meta, content, link, image, and semantic issues. It lists all issues your site may have under these categories and provides an actionable, easy-to-follow checklist of suggestions to resolve them.

Raven tools site audit (1)

One of the things I love about Raven Tools Website Auditor is the scheduling option. To ensure you fix issues as they occur on your website, you can schedule them to be analyzed weekly or monthly. With that, Raven Tools monitors and alerts you when an issue occurs on your website.

Website audits on Semrush are much more detailed and comprehensive than those on Raven Tools. Once you enter your domain into Semrush’s Site Audit tool, a comprehensive dashboard appears containing information on your website’s health, errors, warnings, notices, crawled pages, and more.

semrush site audit (1)

Semrush provides thematic reports on your site’s crawlability, HTTPS, international SEO, Core Web Vitals, site performance, internal linking, and markup.

I love that Semrush categorizes issues based on severity to give you insights on which ones to resolve first. “Errors” are the most severe and should be resolved immediately to avoid severe damage to your site’s overall performance. “Warnings” and “Notices” are less severe than “Errors” but also need to be fixed to prevent them from developing into “Errors.”

Raven Tools vs Semrush for site audit: Semrush

Raven Tools is great if you want regular, easy-to-follow audits with scheduled updates, making it ideal for consistent monitoring. Semrush provides more in-depth audits of your website’s overall health.

It categorizes issues by severity to help you prioritize critical fixes, explaining every issue’s impact on your SEO and providing detailed recommendations for fixing them.

I love Semrush’s Site Health feature, which shows you, at a glance, your website’s overall SEO health.

User experience and interface

Raven Tools provides a simple user interface that enables you to perform any task with relative ease.

It’s easy to navigate. Although it provides less information than Semrush, it presents it simply that even beginners will understand.

Semrush, on the other hand, has a steeper learning curve due to its extensive features and depth of data. It presents data in detailed formats, adding graphs, trends, and other graphics to help you understand the information better.

While this makes it more difficult for beginners to navigate, it provides a great user experience to those with some SEO experience, as they can gain detailed insights to guide their SEO activities.

Raven Tools vs Semrush on user experience and interface

Raven Tools offers a straightforward user interface that helps you perform tasks quickly without overwhelming you with too much information. Semrush, with its comprehensive features and detailed data presentations, including graphs and trends, is more suited if you want to dive deep into SEO analytics and appreciate a richer set of data visualizations.

Raven Tools provides customer support through email and its mailing address. You can get support for any challenge you have, as Raven Tools has experts managing their email accounts.

Semrush, on the other hand, offers extensive customer support through emails, phone calls, and live chats. You can also make support requests through an online form on the platform.
